This device is pushing the envelope for a powerful device at an affordable price. This piece of hardware boasts impressive specs such as an HD screen, front-facing camera, and a quad core processor as well as the new Android 4.1 Jelly Bean OS. The best part is that you can get it for a low $199. This beast of a tablet is aimed at the 7 inch tablet market, but the aggressively priced device might do more than that.
The goal of this device was to create a device that would attempt to show the potential of the 7 inch tablets and not cost much more.
It was designed to be about the size and weight of a paperback book. With Google’s push into the Google Play market and its media content the Nexus 7 is perfect to showcase everything that is Google Play. Whether you want to watch movies, listen to music, read a book, or play a game this tab will do it and do it well.
Google was partnered up with hardware companies such as Samsung, HTC, and Motorola for its previous devices, but when they were looking into their plans for the Nexus 7 Asus stepped up to bat. Asus heard what Google planned and showed them what they were capable of and Google claims they knew immediately that these were the right guys for the job. Google wanted to mix superior hardware with their superior software to get a result that was both stunning and once again, ridiculously low priced.
When Google’s Patrick Brady was asked why Google tablets hadn’t started to outsell the iPad his response was pretty standard. The statement he made was that in the world of tablets there is no one choice. There are numerous sizes and flavors of tablets and at the end of the day it would come down to preference and need. He felt that there was a lot of content missing in earlier products and they have answered that with their Google Play update. He feels that the Nexus 7 is the best tablet on the market today, but makes the statement that “One size doesn’t fit all” and that there will always be a broad market filling many needs.
When compared to the iPad things seem one sided, but the important thing to remember is that the iPad is like a companion that follows you around filling many needs where the Nexus 7 is made specifically for you to experience and consume media out of the Google Play store. The Nexus is better compared to the Kindle fire and the Nook as that is what the device is meant to compete with. While the Google tablet might not be a multipurpose tool like the iPad, it feels like a very solid device that is perfect for the specific purposes it is designed for and like the Kindle and its like, the Nexus is focused on a certain group and will dominate that field.
The specs for this Google Masterpiece are impressive. It is rocking a 7-inch 1280-800 resolution LED backlit screen, the NVIDIA Tegra 3 Quad Core Processor, and a 1.2-megapixel front-facing camera. It starts with 8GB of internal storage, but has a 16GB option that costs $250. It has Bluetooth 4.0, a MicroUSB port, accelerometer, magnetometer, ambient light sensor, gyroscope, GPS, and NFC. It features the Google Play Store and comes with 2 color options, white and black combo or just black.
Another thing to get excited about is Google’s recent move with Google Play and how it updates apps on your phone. Currently app markets re-download the whole app, but Google is moving towards a setup that will just download the portion of the APK file that is needed to rather than the entire App. This will cut down on data expenses for sure.
It will be very interesting to see how the market handles this device in the near future. Will it compete well against the iPad? Can the Nexus 7 measure up to the iconic device? Time will tell and I for one cannot wait. With this little beauty you get so much for your dollar that even people who never thought about or wanted a tablet are starting to consider it. It might just be time for people to upgrade their e-reading experience from an app on their smartphone to this affordable beast of a device. We will see it start shipping mid-July so preorder yours ASAP and ensure that you get it as soon as possible.
